Wastewater treatment consultancy

Industrial wastewater treatment consultancy

Industrial wastewater is a process problem before it is a treatment problem. Where a stream comes from, what it carries and whether it should be mixed with the others at all usually decides more than the treatment plant does. We start there.

The engagement, on one sheet
Investigate

Who arrives here

You are probably here because

If none of these is your situation, it is still worth a conversation: this list is not exhaustive.

  • Several processes discharge to one drain and the combined effluent is untreatable as designed
  • A reuse or zero liquid discharge obligation has arrived and the existing plant is the starting point
  • A new line or product is being added and its effluent has not been characterised
  • A vendor'''s proposal needs a technical review before it is signed
  • Nobody in the organisation owns the wastewater question technically

What an investigation looks at.

Lines of enquiry, not conclusions. Which of them matters for your plant is what the investigation establishes.

Line of enquiry01

Characterisation and segregation

  • Stream-by-stream flow and load, measured rather than estimated from production
  • Which streams are strong, which are dilute, and which are simply in the wrong pipe
  • Whether segregation removes the problem more cheaply than treating the combined effluent
  • Recovery at source, where a stream is worth more than it costs to recover

Line of enquiry02

Treatability and process selection

  • Biodegradability and treatability, established rather than assumed from the industry
  • Whether the selected process train can reach the required outlet from the actual influent
  • Sludge production, its character and what it will cost to handle and dispose of

Line of enquiry03

Reuse, ZLD and concentrate

  • Where treated water can honestly be reused, and at what quality the receiving process needs it
  • Concentrate management, which is where most ZLD schemes actually fail commercially
  • Evaporation and crystallisation duty against real, measured concentrate volume
  • Energy cost per cubic metre of the whole scheme, not of one stage

Line of enquiry04

Compliance and evidence

  • The consent condition actually being measured against, and how it is sampled
  • Monitoring adequacy, record keeping and what would be defensible under scrutiny
What an engagement produces, level by level
